Brushstrokes Connecting Souls: The Emotional Opening Ceremony and Symposium on Japanese Calligraphy at DTU

On May 15, 2026, the Opening Ceremony and Symposium on Japanese Calligraphy officially took place at Duy Tan University. This was not merely an artistic event but also an impressive outcome of the international partnership-building efforts of the Japanese Language Faculty, University of Languages and Social Sciences (ULSS), aimed at providing an authentic cultural experience for students and the art-loving community.

This event was the result of close collaboration between the Japanese Language Faculty (ULSS), Techzen Company, and Japanese partners. With a training orientation rooted in practical experience and cultural exchange, the Japanese Language Faculty played a crucial coordination role in inviting a renowned delegation of calligraphy masters to visit and work in Da Nang.

The program had the honor of welcoming Mr. Takero Mori – Consul General of Japan in Da Nang – along with leading calligraphers such as Master Yoshiki Toshimori (Member of Nitten), Ms. Keiko Hiraga (Member of the Yomiuri Calligraphy Society), and Ms. Yamashita Keimei. Representing the connecting unit, Dr. Hoang Thi Huong (Dean of ULSS), together with the leadership and faculty of the Japanese Language Faculty, demonstrated hospitality and professionalism in their organizational work, affirming the university's reputation in cultural diplomacy activities.

In their speeches at the ceremony, all representatives emphasized that calligraphy is not merely writing but an art form crystallizing from brushstrokes, soul, and the Japanese philosophy of life. Through the Japanese Language Faculty's connections, students were able not only to view the artworks but also to listen to profound insights into the history and artistic thinking of the East.

The opening ceremony and the exchange of commemorative calligraphy works between the Japanese calligraphy delegation and the university's leadership served as a testament to a strong friendship. This was also a valuable opportunity for Japanese Language students to practice their language skills and deepen their understanding of the "Way" ("Do") spirit in the culture of the country they are studying.

Within the symposium, the speakers offered profound professional perspectives:

The Thousand-Year Journey of Calligraphy: Master Yoshiki Toshimori vividly presented the history of the formation and development of Japanese calligraphy, helping the audience understand the enduring vitality of this art form across different eras.

The Beauty Within Each Brushstroke: Ms. Yamashita Keimei shared insights on "The Beauty of the Character 'Kawa' (River)," analyzing the fusion of form and the profound meaning hidden within each moving brushstroke.

The success of the Opening Ceremony and Symposium served as a foundation for the subsequent exhibition series. The Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition, held on May 16 and the morning of May 17, 2026, at Building G – 120 Hoang Minh Thao – Duy Tan University, attracted significant attention from faculty and students alike.

The event once again affirmed the pioneering role of the Japanese Language Faculty, ULSS, in creating internationally recognized academic playgrounds, contributing to the cultivation of Duy Tan students who are not only proficient in foreign languages but also deeply knowledgeable about and appreciative of the humane cultural values of humanity.
