Literature (Journalistic Literature Concentration)

The Literature program provides students with a solid foundation in literary theory, language, culture, and Vietnamese literature, while offering comprehensive knowledge of major literary traditions around the world. Students develop critical thinking, research methodologies, literary analysis, teaching strategies, creative writing skills, and a deeper appreciation of literature. The program also fosters ethical values, social responsibility, cultural awareness, and a strong appreciation of Vietnam's literary and humanistic heritage.

To meet the evolving needs of society, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Duy Tan University has developed an Applied Literature approach through its Journalism specialization. Built upon strong foundations in language and literature, this program expands beyond literary studies to prepare students for careers in journalism, media, and communications.

The Literature – Journalism program combines academic study with practical application, enabling students not only to pursue literary criticism and research but also to develop professional competencies in journalism and media. This interdisciplinary approach reflects contemporary industry trends while creating broader academic and career opportunities for graduates.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to equip students with advanced theoretical knowledge in literature, linguistics, journalism, and communication while developing practical professional skills required in today's media industry.

Students acquire competencies in:

  • Literary research and criticism.

  • Literary appreciation and teaching.

  • News writing and feature writing.

  • Editing and publishing.

  • Media planning and event organization.

  • Managing literary, journalistic, and communication projects.

Graduates of the program have established successful careers in newspapers, broadcasting organizations, media agencies, and communication companies throughout Central Vietnam and across the country, including Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, Kon Tum, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngai.

The specialization consists of 30 major courses, including:

  • 12 Literature courses, covering Literary Theory, Vietnamese Literature (from Folk Literature to Medieval, Modern, and Contemporary Literature), Western Literature, and Asian Literature.

  • Linguistics courses such as Phonetics, Vocabulary, Grammar, and Introduction to Linguistics.

  • Journalism and media courses including Foundations of Journalism, History of Journalism, Journalistic Language, and Journalism Across Different Media Platforms.

Program Duration: 4 years (132 credits)

Professional Skills

In addition to acquiring comprehensive knowledge of journalism and communication, students develop the practical competencies required of professional journalists, including:

  • Interviewing techniques.

  • News and feature writing.

  • Photography and video production.

  • Reporting across print, radio, television, and digital media.

  • Media law and journalism ethics.

During internships and field placements at media organizations, students produce authentic journalistic work, which serves as an important component of their practical training and academic assessment under the supervision of faculty members and industry mentors.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Literature – Journalism program are qualified for careers such as:

  • Lecturer or Researcher at universities, colleges, vocational institutions, research institutes, and centers specializing in literature, journalism, and communication.

  • Journalist, Reporter, Commentator, Editor, Media Coordinator, or Event Organizer at newspapers, television stations, radio broadcasters, publishing houses, and media organizations.

  • Communications Specialist within government agencies and public information offices at provincial, municipal, district, and commune levels, as well as cultural, publishing, political, diplomatic, and socio-economic organizations requiring expertise in journalism and communication.

Graduates are also academically prepared to pursue postgraduate studies at the Master's and Doctoral levels in Literature, Linguistics, Journalism, and Communication Studies.
