Female student LHSS wins Third Prize at the DTU 2024 Student Research Conference

On June 7, 2024, 20 outstanding research topics from Duy Tan University students in four fields—Science and Technology, Computer Science, Health Sciences, and Social Sciences and Economics—were presented at the DTU Student Research Conference (NCKH). Among these, the topic "Research on the Method of Learning English through English Songs for Duy Tan University Language Major Students" by Nguyen Thi To Uyen, a K27 student from the Faculty of English, School of Language and Social Sciences, Duy Tan University, won the Third Prize in the Social Sciences and Economics category.

Before reaching the DTU conference, To Uyen presented her topic in several rounds, starting from the faculty level, then to the university level, and finally to the sub-committee for the Social Sciences and Economics field. The topic "Research on the Method of Learning English through English Songs for Duy Tan University Language Major Students" was highly regarded by the panels at all levels and was selected to advance to the DTU conference.

In this era of industrialization and modernization, English is one of the most widely spoken languages globally. In particular, listening and speaking skills are essential for beginners. However, many learners still face limitations in communication with native speakers. To Uyen's research aims to propose an interesting and effective learning method by combining listening and speaking practice through popular songs, specifically designed for language major students at Duy Tan University, as well as for the broader English learning community. The research provides basic knowledge on vocabulary, grammar, and connected speech. It then analyzes the results of surveys and experiments to offer relevant recommendations for applying this method in teaching and learning programs, both in the classroom and in real-life situations. This study may help students find a more engaging and personalized way to learn English, improving their listening and pronunciation skills.

To Uyen shared: "Since my first year, when I first heard about the Student Research Conference, I was very curious and realized that participating would give me the chance to discover more and expand my knowledge. So, I started doing research in my second year, but I had many shortcomings at the beginning. The inspiration for my research this time came from the unfinished studies I had done before. Thanks to the feedback and encouragement from Dr. Tran Thi Minh Giang, my supervisor, I decided to revisit and revise my previous research, approaching it from a new and more practical perspective. I feel very lucky and grateful for Dr. Giang’s patient guidance, objective feedback, and wholehearted support, which gave me the confidence to believe in what I was doing."

During the research process, To Uyen faced many difficulties and challenges, from identifying previous mistakes to conducting surveys and experiments, and continuously revising the new errors to finalize her work. However, driven by her passion for research, she made great efforts to complete the project to the best of her ability. To Uyen expressed: "I was really surprised and overjoyed when I received the news that I had won Third Prize. To me, this is an achievement I am very proud of and also a stepping stone to give me more confidence as I move forward to future competitions."
